Gastroesophageal reflux disease occurs when stomach acids come into contact with the lining of the esophagus, causing heartburn (behind the breastbone) and acid regurgitation. The passage of acid from the stomach to the esophagus occurs physiologically during the day, especially after meals. However, if these events exceed a certain threshold in terms of frequency and duration, an actual disease develops. It is a condition that affects about 10–20% of the population in Europe.
